Happy 18th Birthday
Written by Clayton’s mother

On March 5th, 1986
I gave birth to a baby boy,
he filled my life with happiness
he was my pride and joy.

From bottles and diapers
to skinned knees and toys,
never a dull moment
he was 110% boy!

From baseball and basketball
our life was a whirl,
from motorcycles and paintball
and girls, girls, girls!!

I can’t forget to mention
the love he had for his car,
it was the hottest ride in town
and he loved it by far!

For 17 years I watched him
blow out candles on his birthday surprise,
but now because of drugs
he will never again see the sun rise.

He was so excited about his birthday
he couldn’t wait to be 18,
he had his whole life ahead of him
or at least so it seemed.

This was supposed to be a celebration
but Clayton isn’t here for his 18th birthday,
we turn to God for guidance
missing him more than words can say.

No apartment, no college, no future
to look forward to,
all because of what
these terrible drugs did to you.

He wanted to be a teacher
and his death is not in vain,
he has taught us all a lesson
and our lives will never be the same.

He will never have the chance
to grow old or even mature,
and years, and years of heartbreak
his loved ones must endure.

God  needed Clayton to teach a lesson
although his life had barely begun,
and God doesn’t make mistakes
although he took my only son.

As Clayton has taught us–DRUGS KILL
please heed his warning,
don’t let someone you love find you
the way I found him that terrible morning.

From birth to death God had a plan
and Clayton was prepared to go,
he loved the Lord very much
I know because he told me so!
